Why should I get a MyConsult Adoption Consultation from Cleveland Clinic?

Our Adoption Consultation provider, Elaine Schulte, MD, MPH, serves on the American Academy of Pediatrics Executive Committees of the Council on Foster Care, Adoption, and Kinship Care and the Council on Early Childhood and is also a member of the Joint Council on International Children's Services. She is a board-certified Pediatrician who has been in practice for over 20 years.

Dr. Schulte has cared for thousands of children with adoption histories, including those from more than a dozen countries including China, Russia and Ethiopia. Dr. Schulte is an adoptive parent of two wonderful children from China as well.

When should I consider a Cleveland Clinic MyConsult Adoption Consultation?

You should consider getting an Adoption Consultation for a child you are adopting when:

  • You are adopting internationally and want a pre-adoption consultation that includes a comprehensive review of all of the adoptive child's medical records, video files, and photos of the adoptive child on an ongoing basis until your child arrives home.
  • You would like an adoption medical specialist to perform a one-time review of the adoptive child's medical records.
  • You are adopting domestically and want a pre-adoption consultation that includes a comprehensive review of any medical information about a birth mother and any medical information about her child, who is being placed for adoption.
  • You are traveling to a country to adopt a child through a blind referral and you would like an adoption medical specialist to be available for immediate review of the adoptive child's records once you are at the orphanage.
  • Your agency has recommended that an adoption medical specialist review the prospective child's medical records and help prepare you for any medical, developmental or transitional issues.
  • You are adopting a child with multiple medical problems or special needs who may require more intense medical or surgical treatment.
  • Your child is experiencing difficulties post-adoption related to sleep, learning, behavior and/or development.
  • You want general information about international adoption.

Are there consent forms that must be submitted in order to obtain an online adoption consultation from MyConsult?

All of our users requesting an adoption consultation from outside of the state of Ohio must submit a signed physician request for consultation form. It should be signed by a physician involved in the care of the patient and it must match the patient's state of residence. How much does a Cleveland Clinic MyConsult Adoption Consultation cost?

There are 5 Adoption Consultation services offered:

Pre-Adoption Consultation ($565)

Our full pre-adoption consultations include:

  • Immediate review of your child's medical records, photos and video files
  • Interpretation of medical terminology
  • Assessment of growth
  • Outline of developmental and behavioral expectations
  • A plan to address medical developmental, feeding, sleeping and other issues beforehand, especially if travel is required
  • Phone consultation and support during the adoption process, even during trips abroad
  • Information about adoption resources
Post-Adoption Consultation ($565)

Our post-adoption consultations assist parents in addressing any issues that may arise after adoption such as difficulties related to sleep, behavior, learning or development. Our adoption specialist will review the child's medical history, records, and test results, and provide a comprehensive, personalized report, taking care to answer your individual questions. You will be able to review treatment options or alternatives, as well as recommendations regarding your child's future care needs. This option is available for adopted children of any age.

Additional Child Review ($125)

If needed, a consultation for the adoption of an additional child can be requested within one year of receiving a pre-adoption consultation. If a year has passed since the initial pre-adoption consultation, another pre-adoption consultation at the cost of $565 must be requested.

Record Review ($285)

A personal phone consultation with Dr. Schulte for a one-time medical record review, which may include photos and/or videotapes. If on-going access is needed for additional questions, or while traveling overseas, please request a Pre-Adoption Consultation.

General Adoption Information ($285)

A personal phone consultation with Dr. Schulte to answer general medical questions regarding adoption. If on-going access is needed for additional questions, or while traveling overseas, please request a Pre-Adoption Consultation.

Since we do not accept cash, your payment options include:
  • A major credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express, or Discover) that will not be charged until your second opinion is completed and ready for your review online.

  • A certified bank check or a certified money order from a U.S. bank and in U.S. dollars that will not be processed until your second opinion is completed and ready for your review online.
While we will not process your payment of the online adoption consultation until the final consultation report has been completed and ready for your review online, it is important to understand that once you have given online authorization in Step 5 to the MyConsult staff to proceed with your adoption consultation request, your opinion process has begun. At this time you may not cancel your request and you will be responsible for the full payment.

Is Cleveland Clinic's MyConsult Adoption Consultation covered by insurance?

Cleveland Clinic's MyConsult Adoption Consultation service is not covered by Medicare and we are not able to accept any insurance payments.

Cleveland Clinic's MyConsult Adoption Consultation service will provide an itemized statement/receipt for your consultation that may be used by you should you choose to seek reimbursement from an employer sponsored medical savings account or other plans. Cleveland Clinic's MyConsult financial services team is not able to file a claim for online consultation services with any insurance company and we are unable to accept any insurance payments.

Can anyone in any state or any country use the Adoption Consultation service?

Cleveland Clinic's Adoption Consultation service is available in most locations with the exception of North Dakota and Guam. All of our users requesting an adoption consultation from outside of the state of Ohio must submit a signed physician request for consultation form. It should be signed by a physician involved in the care of the patient and it must match the patient's state of residence. Can I send the medical records to Cleveland Clinic in a language other than English?

We are not able to process requests that are not in English and we do not provide a document translation service. All submissions pertaining to your adoption consultation must be translated prior to being submitted to the Cleveland Clinic MyConsult office. Medical translation services (not within Cleveland Clinic) are available and we would suggest researching to find the one that best suits your needs.

Do I have to have an email account to request a Cleveland Clinic MyConsult Adoption Consultation?

Yes, our staff will need to communicate with you via email to let you know that new information has been sent to your secure online MyConsult account that you will set-up during the registration process. We do not send any medical information to your email account as this is not a secure environment. We strictly send reminders and/or status updates about your second opinion letting you know to log on to your secure account.

What kind of computer do I need to access the MyConsult Adoption Consultation?

As long as your computer can access the internet, you can probably use our site. We're compatible with all current operating systems and most browsers.

Specifically, we use 128-bit encryption to secure your medical data. This ensures that the only people who can access your data are you and the Cleveland Clinic MyConsult office staff.





Questions and Answers to Review Before Submitting Your Request
Can I cancel my MyConsult Adoption Consultation?

You may cancel your adoption request at any time while you are filling out the online forms. Simply click on the "cancel" button at the end of any section to delete your request. However, you may not cancel your consultation once you have authorized us to proceed (upon completion of the online steps) and we have started working on your request. Where do I send my materials?

Please send all materials to the Cleveland Clinic MyConsult office. For your convenience, you may print out and use the mailing label provided on our website located in the "mailing instructions" section of the request an opinion process. Please use a mailing service that requires a signature from the recipient such as Federal Express, DHL or registered U.S. mail (UPS and Federal Express packages cannot be accepted on weekends or holidays. USPS packages are accepted on Saturday). Our mailing address is:

Questions and Answers to Review Once the Online Request is Completed
How long will it take to receive my MyConsult Adoption Consultation?

Once all of the appropriate materials have been received, your request will be reviewed by Elaine Schulte, M.D. within 2-3 business days from the time that we receive all of the adoptive child's medical information. Following her thorough review of your request, Dr. Schulte will call you personally, (within 2-3 business days) to discuss your request. We will mail you a hard copy of the report approximately two days after the consult is completed.

Will I receive a receipt for the MyConsult Adoption Consultation?

Yes. We will mail you your itemized statement/receipt approximately 3 weeks after your adoption consultation report is completed.

Can I check on the status of my MyConsult Adoption Consultation?

Yes. You may check the status at any time. Simply log onto our website and log in to the secure account you set-up during the registration process. Our staff will communicate with you via email to let you know that new information has been sent to your secure online MyConsult account so we recommend checking your email at least once a day. We do not send any medical information to your email account as this is not a secure environment. We strictly send reminders and/or status updates about your second opinion letting you know to log on to your secure account. We will notify you by email when:

  • We receive your online request
  • We receive your supporting medical materials
  • Your opinion is complete and available on the website
We will also contact you via phone or email if we have a question about your request. Since email is not the most secure environment, we will not include any specific medical questions or information in the email. Instead, we will instruct you to contact the MyConsult office or go to our website and log on to your secure account for information regarding your online second opinion.

Who will see my information that I send over the Internet?

You and the Cleveland Clinic MyConsult staff only. When it comes to handling patient's medical information, Cleveland Clinic has always adhered to the highest standard of privacy. Today, we continue that strict practice when communicating with patients via our website. We ensure your complete privacy via the internet by:

  • Having you register and set up a secure online account through our website.
  • Establishing a secure account that ensures a secure connection between you and Cleveland Clinic.
  • Encrypting (scrambling) your information via Secured Sockets Layer (SSL) 128-bit encryption keys ensures your privacy as well.
Your computer securely and privately transfers your information to Cleveland Clinic. However, you must use a browser capable of 128-bit encryption, Internet Explorer 6.02 or higher. If our system detects that your browser does not meet this specification, we will notify you and instruct you to upgrade your browser. Will my information be shared with anyone else for any other purpose?

Cleveland Clinic's MyConsult staff and Dr. Elaine Schulte will see your medical information. If necessary, information may be shared with other members of Cleveland Clinic staff including pediatric sub-specialists, such as developmentalists, cardiologists or infectious disease specialists. Will you store my credit card information?

When you request an adoption consultation and provide your credit card information to us, we will store the information in our secure system until your request is complete. We do not store credit card information beyond this time period. If you request an additional adoption consultation at a future date, we will ask you to provide your credit card information again. Will my medical information be returned?

Medical records, photos and videotapes are not returned. Therefore, we advise you to make copies of this information prior to sending it to the Cleveland Clinic MyConsult office.

Can I speak with or email Dr. Schulte about my adoption consultation?

Yes. Dr. Schulte will contact you by phone within 2-3 business days of receiving your materials.

If I bring my adopted child to Cleveland Clinic will I be able to see a member of the Cleveland Clinic Children's team?

Yes. Please notify the Cleveland Clinic MyConsult office by phone at 1.216.444.3223 or 1.800.223.2273 ext 43223, or by email at myconsult@ccf.org if you would like to come to Cleveland Clinic for an appointment. We will help facilitate your appointment request through Cleveland Clinic Children's.





General Questions and Answers about Cleveland Clinic
Do I need a referral to bring my child to Cleveland Clinic?

No. Although many doctors refer patients to Cleveland Clinic, a referral is not necessary. Before scheduling an appointment, however, we suggest checking with your insurance company to determine your plan's referral requirements. If you are not working through the MyConsult adoption program, but would still like to make an appointment at Cleveland Clinic, please call 1.866.320.4573.
