When should I consider a MyConsult online nutrition consultation?

You should consider getting an online nutrition consultation when:

  • You have been told by your physician to see a registered dietitian to help you achieve your weight and/or heart-health goals

How many online nutrition sessions will I have with the dietitian?
The number of sessions you will have with the registered dietitian depends on what you are trying to achieve. In most cases, if you are trying to lose weight, reduce your cholesterol or improve your blood sugars, you will have a total of two to three sessions with the registered dietitian. After your initial consultation, you and the dietitian will work together to schedule the follow-up sessions.

Can I speak with or email the registered dietitian who authored my MyConsult online nutrition consultation?
When your consultation is ready, you will be notified via email that you can review the consultation in your secure online account that you set-up at registration. In order to ensure that you understand the content of the consultation and your questions have been answered, you will have a number of follow-up appointments scheduled with the dietitian. In the event you need immediate assistance, one of our nurses will be available to assist you. In some cases, the registered dietitian may wish to speak with you, at which time our Cleveland Clinic MyConsult office will facilitate the call. Because email is not a secure method of communicating private medical information, please do not email your Cleveland Clinic dietitian.

Do I need my local doctor's permission to request a MyConsult online nutrition consultation?
You may contact Cleveland Clinic's MyConsult online nutrition consultation service directly to request your online nutrition consultation. But in the event you do not have all of the medical information that would be helpful to your nutrition consultation (e.g. latest cholesterol information if you are seeking guidance on cholesterol reduction), you will need to contact your local doctor's office to obtain that medical information.

Can I request an e-Cleveland Clinic MyConsult remote nutrition consultation for someone else?
Yes, if you have the patient's permission. If the patient is 18 years of age or older, he or she must be capable of providing written consent. Print the e-Cleveland Clinic proxy form and have the patient complete, sign and date the form, and mail the form to Cleveland Clinic. We cannot proceed with the nutrition assessment requested by one individual for another without a proxy form signed by the patient for whom the consultation will be conducted.

If the patient is under age 18 and you are the child's parent or legal guardian you do not need to print and complete a proxy form. If the patient is under age 18 and you are not the patient's parent or legal guardian, you must have the patient's parent or legal guardian complete a proxy form to proceed with the nutrition consultation. Please send the proxy form, signed by the child's parent or legal guardian, to the Cleveland Clinic

Will I receive a receipt for the MyConsult online nutrition consultation?
Yes. We will mail you your itemized statement/receipt approximately 10 days after your second opinion report is completed.

Will you store my credit card information?
When you request an online nutrition consultation and provide your credit card information to us, we will store the information in our secure system until your request is complete. We do not store credit card information beyond this time period. If you request an additional online nutrition consultation at a future date, we will ask you to provide your credit card information again. See our Privacy Statement for a full explanation of our information and security practices.

Can I check on the status of my online nutrition consultation request?
Yes. You may check the status at any time. Simply log onto our website and log in to the secure account you set-up during the registration process. Our staff will communicate with you via email to let you know that new information has been sent to your secure online MyConsult account so we recommend checking your email at least once a day. We do not send any medical information to your email account as this is not a secure environment. We strictly send reminders and/or status updates about your online nutrition consultation letting you know to log on to your secure account. We will notify you by email when:

  • We receive your online request
  • We receive your supporting medical information (dependent on the session you choose)
  • Your nutrition consultation is complete and available on the website

We will also contact you via phone or email if we have a question about your request. Since email is not the most secure environment, we will not include any specific medical questions or information in the email. Instead, we will instruct you to go to contact the MyConsult office or go to our website and log on to your secure account for information regarding your online nutrition consultation.

When should I expect to receive my online nutrition consultation assessment?
Before you receive your nutrition assessment, you will be asked why you are seeking an online nutrition consultation. After you have chosen the condition (e.g. high LDL cholesterol, weight loss, blood sugar control, etc.) you will be asked to complete a Nutrition Intake Form. Once you have completed the form the registered dietitian will review your material and provide you with a thorough individualized nutrition assessment. The assessment will include an analysis of your current eating patterns, as well as tips, tables and information about the appropriate dietary changes or enhancements you can make to help you achieve your goals. You will also receive an individualized dietary plan centered around your food preferences. Additional tips, suggestions and information may be included on food label reading, grocery shopping, meal planning, snacking, eating out and eating for special occasions will be included. Follow-up sessions will be arranged to answer additional nutrition questions.

Can I cancel my online nutrition consultation request?
You may cancel your online nutrition consultation request at any time while you are filling out the online forms. Simply click on the “cancel” button at the end of any section to delete your request. However, you may not cancel your consultation once you have authorized us to proceed (upon completion of the online steps) and we have started working on your request.

How can I obtain more information about my medical condition?
In some cases, your registered dietitian will include references to help you obtain more information about your condition within your online nutrition consultation. Another resource is Cleveland Clinic's Health Information Center, www.clevelandclinic.org/health. Cleveland Clinic's Health Information Center contains thousands of searchable health documents, audio tapes and video clips. In addition, the documents contain helpful links to more sources of health information for a particular condition.

Do I need a referral to come to The Cleveland Clinic?
No, while many of our patients are referred to a Cleveland Clinic specialist by their doctors, a referral is not required. However, before you schedule an appointment, you may want to check with your insurance company to determine your insurance plan's referral requirements. Is Cleveland Clinic's MyConsult online nutrition consultation available in every state or country?
Not at this time. We are unable to offer online nutrition consultations to patients whose mailing address is in Guam or North Dakota. We are abiding by all state regulations in offering this service.

Residents of California that would like to request an online medical second opinion need to inquire with our clinical operations staff at 216.444.3223 or toll-free at 800.223.2273 ext 43223prior to filling out any online registration information. Due to current restrictions and limitations in your state, our staff will determine your eligibility in advance. Once we determine your eligibility, you may proceed with your request. Can I send my medical records to Cleveland Clinic in a language other than English?
We are not able to process requests that are not in English and we do not provide a document translation service. All submissions pertaining to your online medical second opinion must be translated prior to being submitted to the Cleveland Clinic MyConsult office. Medical translation services (not within Cleveland Clinic) are available and we would suggest researching to find the one that best suits your needs.
